Super Fruit Blueberry Smoothie
School is back in session! This is the time of year to begin OD-ing on hand sanitizer and washing your hands every chance you get. In addition to being overly cautious of germs, it may even be time to ramp up on vitamins to help boost your immune system. A strong immune system is important in fighting off infections and viruses that we encounter on a daily basis.
I wanted to kick off the school season with our first recipe on the naturally smitten blog. This is my version of a super fruit blueberry smoothie. I make my smoothies a little different than some people. I avoid adding ice, for one. I think that ice is unnecessary because it dilutes the flavor of the smoothie. If you freeze your fruits/veggies, you won’t have to use ice. I also am a firm believer that bananas belong in all smoothies. Why? Because, they make them taste better so, every smoothie recipe I make WILL have the option to add a banana. *insert mischievous grin*
Why is this a super fruit smoothie?
Blueberries may help protect cells from damage and lower inflammation. Blueberries also contain many of the vitamins and minerals known to strengthen the immune system, along with key phytochemicals that may help protect against cancer and heart disease.
Strawberries, contain ellagic acid, another phytochemical that may help protect against cancer-causing agents in the diet and the environment.
Spinach and kale are loaded with antioxidant phytochemicals such as kaempferol, which may help dilate blood vessels and may have cancer-fighting properties. Leeks, lettuce, and kale provide lutein and quercetin, both strong antioxidants. These super veggies are high in nutrients that help fight disease, including vitamins C, E, and A, and calcium. They’re also loaded with magnesium and potassium.
Carrots packed with phytochemicals as well. They are also high in vitamin A, while butternut and acorn squash are tops in vitamins A and C.
Honey also has antioxidant properties. It is also a cough suppressant and it helps to decrease allergies.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1 cup of frozen spinach
1 cup of frozen kale
2 cups of frozen blueberries
1 orange (squeezed)
2-3 frozen strawberries
1/2 of a fresh carrot (or you can use 3-4 baby carrots)
1 cup organic vanilla greek yogurt
1-2 tablespoons of raw organic honey
1-1/2 fresh banana
Feel free to add any protein supplements or vitamins to your smoothie, as well. Just keep in mind that the end consistency and or fast may change slightly due to the grainy-ness or flavor of your supplement.
Add your fresh ingredients into your blender, and blend!
